The German military said today that its soldiers had accidentally killed five Afghan troops.

A statement from the German central command said the friendly fire incident happened amid heavy fighting between German troops and militants near the northern city of Kunduz.

They said German troops who were rushing from Kunduz to the scene in the afternoon encountered two civilian vehicles on the road who did not stop after being warned.

A German tank opened fire on the vehicles only to discover later that Afghan soldiers had been inside them, the statement said. A thorough investigation was pending, the military added.

Nato and Afghan army officials said six Afghan soldiers were killed and more were wounded.

The discrepancy in numbers was not explained.
