Peru landslides kill 25

Heavy rains in north-eastern Peru caused landslides that killed at least 25 people, the area chief said today.

Another 25 people are missing and at least 50 are injured.

Regional president Jorge Espinoza said the landslide today in the town of Porvenir killed 20 people. He said five died yesterday in the town of Cancejos.

Civil defence chief Hipolito Cruchaga said the landslide in Porvenir damaged 120 houses and injured 50 people, with rescuers still hunting for 25.
