Some Guantanamo prisoners transferred to Georgia

Three detainees from Guantanamo Bay were transferred from the island prison to the country of Georgia.

Since 2002 when the US prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, was opened, more than 580 detainees were moved from there to other destinations. At least 38 countries accepted Guantanamo detainees.

The Justice Department said the identities of the three detainees sent to Georgia are being withheld for security and privacy reasons.

The transfers leave 183 detainees at Guantanamo.

A presidential task force recommended at least 80 of the Guantanamo prisoners be brought to the US for trial before civilian courts or military commissions or for continued imprisonment without charges.

About 110 detainees have been approved for transfer to foreign countries.
