Kidnap boy Sahil back home with 'overjoyed' family

Exhausted Sahil Saeed was today enjoying his first full day back home since being freed from his two week kidnap ordeal in Pakistan.

The five-year-old arrived back in Oldham, Greater Manchester, with his father last night to a rapturous reception from relatives.

A home-made banner saying “Welcome Sahil” hung from windows outside the terraced house, with steel barriers surrounding the property to keep back dozens of reporters, photographers and TV crews.

Sahil made a brief appearance after his arrival, hiding his face from waiting media as he was held in his mother Akila Naqqash’s arms outside the home.

The schoolboy was snatched on March 4 by gunmen during a holiday in Pakistan with his father, Raja Naqqash Saeed, and other relatives. He was released on Tuesday, and found wandering in a field nearby.

Last night his aunt, Naila Wasseem, and great-uncle, Mushtaq Raja, said the family was “overjoyed” to have him back. Relatives dashed in and out of the house, bringing food in big steel pans for the celebrations.

Ms Wasseem said: “We are ecstatic, everybody is over the moon. Everybody, for 13 days, all we have done is non-stop praying. Now the mood’s totally changed.

“I think today is going to be low-key, maybe the next few days we will have a party.”

Sahil’s great-uncle added: “They (Sahil’s parents) wanted to cry – when you are so happy, you had lost your son, then he appears before your eyes – you can’t imagine how emotional it is. The boy is very tired.”

The kidnappers struck while Sahil was in Jhelum, in the Punjab region of Pakistan.

An international police operation was launched and Mr Saeed returned to Europe, going to Paris where he handed over a £110,000 ransom to secure his son’s release.

Three people – two Pakistani men and a Romanian woman – were arrested in Spain after police followed two of them from the French capital.

All three appeared in court in Spain yesterday where they were remanded in custody charged with kidnapping a minor.

A decision will be made “in the coming days” over which country’s jurisdiction the investigation will proceed under, a Spanish court official said.

Two other people were arrested in Paris and later released.

After handing over the ransom, Mr Saeed returned to Pakistan, where he was reunited with his son yesterday at the home of the British High Commissioner.

Footage released of the reunion showed him sending a message to his mother.

He said: “Mummy, I miss you. Mummy, I love you.”

Describing his emotional reunion with his son, Mr Saeed said: “When I saw him he started saying: ’Daddy, Daddy, Daddy’ and he came downstairs. I picked him up, gave him a hug and started kissing him.

“And I started crying because I’m seeing him after two weeks. He asked me: ’Where’s Mummy?’ He wanted to see his mum as well.

“He said: ’I’ve been missing you and mum as well.’ He was so emotional at that time.”

The pair flew into Manchester Airport from Islamabad last night and headed straight to the family home where the little boy’s return prompted scenes of celebration.
