Pakistan and Afghanistan hit by quake

A moderate earthquake rattled northern Pakistan and Afghanistan but there are no reports of injuries or damage.

Pakistani government meteorologist Qamar Zaman Chaudhry said the quake happened at 4.21am Pakistan time today.

It was felt in northern Pakistan and in Kabul, the capital of neighbouring Afghanistan.

The US Geological Survey said it was magnitude 5.7, and was centred in the Hindu Kush mountains 110 miles northeast of Kabul.

Earthquakes often rattle the region. A magnitude 7.6 quake on October 8, 2005, killed about 80,000 people in northwestern Pakistan and Kashmir and left more than three million people homeless.
