Mozambique: Ex-minister sentenced to 20 years

A court in Mozambique has sentenced three people to at least 20 years in prison each in the country’s biggest corruption case since independence.

Former transport minister Antonio Munguambe was convicted of stealing money from the company that runs the country’s airports and sentenced today to 20 years.

Two other former officials were sentenced 20 years and 22 years respectively.

Prosecutors had accused the officials of stealing nearly £1.3m (€1.45m) from the company.

Munguambe was fired last year – not because of the corruption scandal, but because of riots in Mozambique’s capital over the high price of fuel.

It is the biggest corruption case to go to court since independence from Portugal in 1975.
