Serbian police search Mladic's house

Masked policemen were searching the Belgrade house of genocide suspect Ratko Mladic today in a sign of government resolve to hunt down war crimes fugitives as Serbia seeks EU membership.

About a dozen special police blocked the street in a residential area of the capital where the house belonging to Mladic’s family is located.

The war crimes prosecutor’s office said the search was part of efforts to find the former Bosnian Serb army commander wanted over the massacre of 8,000 Muslims from Srebrenica during the Bosnian war.

Mladic has been at large since he was indicted by the UN court in The Hague, Netherlands, in 1995.

He is believed to be hiding in Serbia under nationalists’ protection.

Serbia must arrest Mladic to move closer to EU membership.
