The United Nations has opened top-level talks with North Korea for the first time in six years, the world body’s political chief said today.

Under-secretary general for political affairs Lynn Pascoe, the highest-ranking UN official to visit the reclusive communist nation since 2004, did not disclose details about future talks but said senior officials from one or two UN agencies planned visits to Pyongyang.
