Obama's aunt forced to wait for asylum hearing decision

An immigration hearing for President Barack Obama’s African aunt ended without an immediate decision on asylum.

Kenya native Zeituni Onyango gave evidence for about two and a half hours yesterday at the closed proceedings in US Immigration Court. Two doctors also supported the case that her lawyer says includes medical reasons to stay in the US.

Lawyers for Ms Onyango and the government had 30 days to file closing briefs. The hearing could continue on May 25 if the judge does not issue a ruling before then.

Ms Onyango, the half-sister of Mr Obama’s late father, moved to the United States in 2000. Her first asylum request was rejected and she was ordered to be deported in 2004, but she did not leave the country and continued to live in public housing in Boston, Massachusetts.
