EU pledges more money to Haiti

The European Union has promised at least €400m in long-term aid for quake-hit Haiti.

So far, €92m has been donated by EU members, with an additional €100m going to non-humanitarian assistance such restoring Government capabilities.

“It is quite obvious that the member countries of the European Union are going to be generous and open-minded with help but it is necessary to co-ordinate and get it as effective as possible,” said German State Secretary Werner Hoyer.

EU ministers are also considering a French proposal for an international donors’ conference.
