A Yemeni governor has said security forces have killed a suspected al-Qaida figure in a raid in a remote mountainous province.

Security officials also said two members of the security forces were killed and four wounded when suspected al-Qaida fighters attacked their patrol today elsewhere in Shabwa province, east of the capital San’a.

Shabwa’s governor, Ali Ahmadi, said the militant, Abdullah Mizhar, was killed last night in the raid on a house in the Maysaa region.

Mr Ahmadi said Mizhar was the leader of a local group of al-Qaida fighters.

Security officials said four others with Mizhar were arrested, while the rest fled.
