Cyprus Airport reopens
Cyprus’ main airport reopened today after shutting down overnight to repair malfunctioning runway lights.
Larnaca Airport operator Hermes spokesman Adamos Aspris said the lights have been fixed and the airport is operating normally.
Aspris said 22 flights from countries including Britain, Germany and the Netherlands. Two flights were cancelled while the rest were diverted to the island’s secondary Paphos airport around 110km west.
One flight had to be diverted to Beirut in Lebanon, 130 miles (210km) south east of Larnaca.
The new Larnaca terminal officially opened last month and uses the same runway as the now defunct terminal about half a mile away. Aspris said the runway lights were an older installation.
