Obama expected to boost US troop numbers in Afghanistan

US President Barack Obama is set to announce a major troop surge in Afghanistan today, after Gordon Brown said the UK’s military commitment will top 10,000.

Up to 35,000 more American forces are expected to be deployed in a bid to get the upper hand against the Taliban.
