Twelve die, 31 injured in Texas shooting

President Obama has described a mass shooting at an army base in Texas as a horrendous outburst of violence.

Twelve people were killed, and at least 31 more wounded, when a gunman opened fire at Fort Hood.

The suspect's been named as Nidal Malik Hasan - an Army psychiatrist, who treated war wounded.

Early reports said he'd been killed in the attack, but officials now say that he was injured and is in a stable condition in custody, in hospital.

Fort Hood is the biggest military base in the world, and a major deployment point for US operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The shootings took place in an area where soldiers preparing to be sent overseas were undergoing last-minute medical check-ups.

It's reported that Major Hasan was unhappy that he was about to be deployed to Iraq.
