The mother and stepfather of an eight-year-old girl found hanged in her bedroom were on bail today after being arrested by English police.

Simon and Susan Moody were arrested yesterday, more than two weeks after the body of Charlotte Avenall was found at their home in Mansfield, Notts.

The young girl, who had severe learning disabilities, was discovered hanged in her bedroom on September 12.

Mr Moody (aged 32), and his 24-year-old wife were initially interviewed under caution following her death.

A Nottinghamshire Police spokeswoman said the couple were released last night on police bail.

She said: “Two people who were arrested in connection with the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of eight-year-old Charlotte Avenall have both been released on unconditional police bail pending further enquiries.”

Nottinghamshire County Council’s social services department previously said it would be reviewing the care and support it offered Charlotte and her family.

She was known to social services from birth and attended Birklands Primary School in nearby Warsop.

A post-mortem examination carried out at Leicester Royal Infirmary confirmed the cause of the girl’s death at her home in Moor Street as hanging.
