A tropical depression and heavy monsoon rains have killed 11 people and forced more than 74,000 to flee floodwaters in the northern Philippines, officials said today.

The government’s disaster agency said that heavy rains this week triggered widespread flooding on the main island of Luzon.

It said landslides have killed two children in Laguna province and three security guards of a mining company in Zambales province west of Manila. Six others have drowned in floodwaters.

It said more than 4,000 have fled to evacuation centres and about 70,000 others took shelter with relatives and friends.

Weathermen said a tropical depression north east of the country has been inducing monsoon rains.
