Afghanistan’s deputy chief of intelligence has been killed in an explosion, officials said today.

Dr Abdullah Laghmani died in a blast during the inauguration of a new mosque in the city of Mehterlam in Laghman province, 60 miles (100km) east of Kabul, said Sayed Ahmad Safi, spokesman for the province’s governor.
