34 feared dead after bus plunges into river

As many as 34 passengers were feared dead today after the bus they were in fell into a river in northern Pakistan.

Police official Mohammed Nasir said the bus ran off a narrow mountainous road near the scenic tourist destination of Gilgit.

He said rescue teams had been sent to the area, but so far no bodies had been recovered from the fast-flowing Indus river.

Such accidents are common in Pakistan, where roads are often poorly maintained and drivers regularly disregard traffic rules.
