A manhunt was underway in the UK tonight after a suspected wanted man shot at a police patrol near a busy railway station.

Two officers were hurt when a man pulled out a gun and fired at them near Waterloo railway station, in central London.

Colleagues were investigating whether one of the officers narrowly escaped serious injury.

The officer suffered a small cut to his leg but it is not clear whether the wound was caused by a bullet.

The shooting took place in The Cut, a street packed with shops and bars that runs between Waterloo and Southwark Tube station.

It is understood the patrolling officers saw a suspected wanted man on a bicycle and chased him when he refused to stop.

The suspect then produced a gun from inside his clothing and fired at least one shot at the pursuing officers before making good his escape.

Police said an investigation into the incident was underway.
