Iran detains three US tourists

Iran has detained three Americans who are thought to have strayed into Iranian territory while on a hiking trip, it emerged today.

The US State Department has said it is looking into reports that the Americans were detained while hiking near Iran’s border in the self-ruled Kurdish region.

The Kurdish regional government’s envoy to Washington, Qubad Talabani, said Iran confirmed the three tourists are in Iranian custody.

Iran has not commented on the case.
