Court postpones verdict in democracy leader trial

The Burmese court is expected to deliver a verdict in opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s trial on August 11, a government official has said today.

The verdict was scheduled to be delivered today. It was not immediately clear why the hearing was postponed.

The government official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to journalists, who were not allowed in the courtroom.

The 64-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner is charged with violating the terms of her long house arrest when an American intruder swam across a lake and spent two nights at her home in early May.

She faces up to five years in prison.

Suu Kyi has been in detention for 14 of the last 20 years.
