News of the World parent company News International has said allegations that police officers found evidence that the newspaper hacked into "thousands" of mobile phones are "untrue".

On Wednesday The Guardian began reporting that the paper had accessed the voicemails of hundreds of public figures, including with former British deputy prime minister John Prescott, London Mayor Boris Johnson and actress Gwyneth Paltrow.
