Couple struck dead by lightning on Great Wall

A recently married couple were killed in a lightning strike while climbing on a rugged section of the Great Wall of China.

The Beijing Times newspaper said the force of the lightning strike caused the pair to fall off the wall in Huairou, a Beijing suburb.

Rescuers arrived about two hours later but the couple had already stopped breathing.

The paper said the couple were both aged 27 and had married late last year.

The man worked at the State Intellectual Property Office while his wife was a PhD candidate at Peking University.
