Sixty-four die in Sri Lanka as hospital is shelled

Artillery shells have hit a makeshift hospital in Sri Lanka’s war zone, killing at least 64 people, a health official said today.

The government health official in the conflict zone said at least 64 patients and bystanders were killed today in two artillery attacks on the hospital.

The pro-rebel TamilNet website accused government forces of shelling the hospital on both Friday and today.

Military spokesman Brig Udaya Nanayakkara denied the military had shelled the area.
