The United Nations says that nearly 6,500 civilians have been killed and 14,000 wounded in fighting in Sri Lanka over the past three months, it was disclosed today.

The figures are contained in a UN document circulated among diplomatic missions in Sri Lanka in recent days and given to a journalist today. The UN has declined to publicly release its casualty figures.
