Two Sumatran elephants used to patrol protected forests from illegal loggers and poachers were killed with single shots to the head, Indonesia wildlife officials said today.

Provincial conservation chief Andi Basrul said the motive behind the attack deep inside Kerinci National Park is still being investigated, but the gunmen appeared to be professional poachers.
