Shakespeare portrait altered by mistake

British restorers unwittingly altered what is believed to be the only known portrait made of William Shakespeare during his lifetime, it was claimed today.

Experts had discounted the artwork as being a representation of the great playwright after deciding it was probably changed after his death in 1616.
