The mayor of Venice today defended a scheme allowing Coca-Cola to install vending machines in the city.

The mayor of Venice today defended a scheme allowing Coca-Cola to install vending machines in the city.

Mayor Massimo Cacciari had been accused of spoiling the image of Venice.

Municipal officials said the deal has yet to be signed and machines would not be put in or near city landmarks such as St Mark’s Square, but only at the stops of waterbuses.

The mayor said the deal was part of a “financial strategy that today is indispensable for the safeguard of our artistic heritage” and that any such deal is overseen and approved by the city’s artistic superintendent.
