IVF mother given wrong embryo

An IVF patient was implanted with someone else’s embryo after a hospital mix-up in Japan, doctors admitted today.

The woman, in her 20’s, aborted the pregnancy when told of the mix-up at the government-run hospital in Kagawa, about 300 miles from Tokyo.

She is now suing the local government for 200,000 yen (€170,000).

Hospital officials apologised for the mistake at a public news conference today.

Yuzo Matsumoto, director of the Kagawa Prefectural Central Hospital, said: “She was very happy after undergoing such a difficult procedure and becoming pregnant, but unfortunately a mistake had been made.”
