Three houses and a golf club were destroyed today as extreme weather conditions in south east Australia fuelled wildfires and fear and crews battled scores of blazes.

Tens of thousands of volunteer firefighters were mobilised or on alert across three states to try to contain fires which burned for the most part in forest parks and other unpopulated areas but threatened about half a dozen towns.
