China declares drought emergency

China declared an official emergency today in eight provinces hit by a drought that has left nearly four million people without drinking water.

China suffers from an uneven distribution of its water. Weather patterns in the arid north and flood-prone south cost the government tens of millions of pounds in lost productivity each year.
