Hundreds of people holding signs and waving American flags cheered wildly to honour the pilot who safely landed a US Airways jet in New York’s Hudson River.

Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger was given a hero’s welcome in the San Francisco suburb of Danville, California, where he lives, complete with a marching band.
