One of the crew from Japan’s controversial whale-hunting fleet was missing presumed dead today after apparently falling overboard in freezing Antarctic waters south of New Zealand.

Whaling ship Kyoshin Maru No. 2 called for help but rescue officials decided no boats or planes could reach the remote waters several thousand miles south of New Zealand in time to save the sailor, who had by then been missing for at least six hours.
