India's foreign minister denied making a phone call to Pakistan's president at the height of the Mumbai attacks that led to Pakistan putting its air force on alert.

Pakistan said President Asif Ali Zardari received a "threatening" call during the crisis, apparently from Indian External affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee.

However, Pakistan's Dawn newspaper said the call was a hoax.

Reacting for the first time to the report, Mr Mukherjee said in a statement today that he had made no such telephone call.
