Hillary Clinton confirmed as Obama’s secretary of state

Former rival Hillary Clinton was today formally named as Barack Obama’s new secretary of state.

The incoming president also said that Robert Gates would remain as defence secretary, making President George Bush’s Pentagon chief his own as he seeks to wind down the US role in Iraq.
