UN radio journalist killed in Congo

A Congolese journalist working for a UN radio station has been murdered outside his home in unstable eastern Congo, officials said.

UN spokesman Madnodje Mounoubai said Radio Okapi reporter Didace Namujimbo was shot in the neck on Friday night as he was walking to his house in the provincial capital of Bukavu in South Kivu.

The circumstances of his killing closely echo the 2007 murder of another Radio Okapi journalist killed in Bukavu, Serge Maheshe.

Mr Namujimbo had reported on current affairs for Radio Okapi for nearly three years.

Bukavu has been relatively calm in recent weeks while violence in neighbouring North Kivu province surged when rebel leader Laurent Nkunda launched an offensive.
