Bali bombers to be executed in November

Three Islamic militants on death row for the 2002 Bali bombings will be executed next month, Indonesian prosecutors said today.

Attorney General spokesman Jasman Panjaitan said the convicts – Imam Samudra, Amrozi Nurhasyim and Ali Ghufron – had “exhausted their legal options”.

The militants, who maintain their attacks were meant to punish the US and its Western allies for alleged atrocities in Afghanistan, will be shot dead by a firing squad.

The Bali attacks – allegedly funded by al Qaida – were carried out by members and associates of Jemaah Islamiyah, a Asian militant group blamed for at least three other suicide bombings in Indonesia.

The 2002 strike killed 202 people, 88 of them Australian tourists.
