Zimbabwe Opposition declares power-sharing impasse

The Zimbabwe opposition has declared power-sharing talks with President Robert Mugabe deadlocked, but added that it hoped the South African mediator could make progress.

Main opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai walked out after hours of talks today, directing reporters' questions to his spokesman, Nelson Chamisa.

"We have reached a deadlock on all issues," Mr Chamisa said, saying at least 10 Cabinet posts remained in dispute.

Mr Mugabe, who left about 45 minutes after Mr Tsvangirai, did not refer to a deadlock, but told reporters that differences remained and said the talks would continue tomorrow.

The opposition "has got their position, we have got our own position", Mr Mugabe said. "We're always defending our position."

He did not elaborate.
