East European nations today asked the EU to ease greenhouse gas targets because of the global economic downturn.

The leaders of Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia and the Baltic states of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia said they wanted the EU to rethink a planned 20% cut in emissions by 2020.
