Seventeen injured in India explosion

An explosion hit a crowded flower market in the Indian capital today, injuring at least 17 people, police said.

The Press Trust of India news agency quoted an unidentified police officer as saying that one person had died in the explosion.

Police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said he could not confirm any death, but that 17 people had been wounded in the blast in New Delhi’s Mehrauli area.

Fire engines and ambulances rushed to the scene of the explosion.

The blast occurred two weeks after a series of bomb explosions struck a park and crowded shopping areas in the capital, killing 21 people and wounding about 100 others.

A group calling itself the Indian Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the attack.

Police believe the group is a front for the Students’ Islamic Movement of India, which was banned in 2001.
