Jury sees footage of de Menezes moments before death

Footage of Jean Charles de Menezes travelling on a London bus just minutes before he was shot dead was revealed for the first time today.

The CCTV images were captured as the 27-year-old Brazilian travelled to work from his south London home.

The grainy pictures showed Mr de Menezes wearing a blue denim jacket and black T-shirt as he boarded the number two bus in Tulse Hill.

Several minutes later the cameras captured an undercover surveillance officer, known only as Ivor, sitting a few seats in front of him.

In Brixton, a council street camera recorded Mr de Menezes getting off the bus in the High Street.

Mr de Menezes can be seen among a large crowd of people opposite Brixton Tube station, which he found was closed.

He is then caught on camera again as he reboarded the bus and sat upstairs for the short journey to Stockwell.

The third day of the inquest into his death heard other cameras on the bus, Stockwell Tube station and train were faulty, however.

Steve Reynolds, of the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), said no footage was recorded for a variety of reasons.

He said engineers found excessive vibrations prevented several cameras on the bus recording fully.

Mr Reynolds added that a workman had stepped on a cable at Stockwell Tube station severing the cameras on platform two from the recorder.

He added cameras on the train did not work because the recording unit had been removed as part of the inquiry into the July 7 attacks.

Nicholas Hilliard QC, for the inquest, said: “It is not a complete picture of film on the bus by any means.”

The inquest into Mr de Menezes death was focusing on evidence recovered by the IPCC in the wake of the July 22, 2005, shooting.

Investigators painstakingly recreated a minute-by-minute account of the 33 minutes between when he left home and was shot seven times.

Mr de Menezes was mistaken for a suicide bomber and shot by two marksmen after boarding a Northern Line train at Stockwell.

Earlier today, footage recorded by a surveillance officer known as Frank, hidden in a van near Mr de Menezes’ Scotia Road home was shown.

It showed six people leaving the modern low-rise block of flats between 7.48am and 8.40am.

However, Frank failed to capture Mr de Menezes on film when he left at 9.33am because he was urinating in a bottle, the inquest heard.

A gym card owned by failed suicide bomber Hussain Osman led British police investigating the botched attacks of the previous day to Scotia Road.
