Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert has formally resigned this evening after handing a letter of resignation to president Shimon Peres.

Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert has formally resigned this evening after handing a letter of resignation to president Shimon Peres.

Earlier, he informed his Cabinet that he was stepping down.
