US financial watchdogs today followed Britain and Ireland in banning the routine stock market practice of short-selling.

The Securities and Exchange Commission’s move was a reflection of regulators’ concern about the widening scope of the financial crisis as entreaties came from all quarters to stem a swarm of short selling.
