Los Angeles fire officials say at least 17 people have been killed in the collision of a Metrolink commuter train and a freight train in the San Fernando Valley.

Los Angeles City Fire Captain Steve Ruda says crews are working on the recovery effort.

About 250 fire department personnel and 200 police officers were on the scene before dawn today.

Officials say there were 222 people on the Metrolink train and four Union Pacific employees aboard the freight train.

As many as 135 people have been reported injured.
