Russian lawmakers today asked President Dimitry Medvedev to recognise the independence of Georgia’s two rebel provinces.

All members of the parliament’s upper chamber voted in favour of proclaiming South Ossetia and Abkhazia independent. The lower chamber was to vote later today.
