Chile: Volcano warning

A Chilean volcanologist said the Chaiten volcano is once again rumbling and could be preparing for another eruption in days.

Jorge Munoz, of Chile’s geological service, said recent seismic activity and ash emissions could be the lead-up to the “worst scenario” of a reactivation of the volcano, 745 miles south of Santiago.

The Chaiten volcano began erupting on May 2, emitting clouds of ash and rock that forced the evacuation of thousands around the town of Chaiten.

Its activity had declined since, but Mr Munoz said vulcanologists began seeing renewed activity on Wednesday which could mean that a new inflow of magma had met an obstruction.
