The two separate blasts went off this morning on buses in the centre of Kunming city in southwest Yunnan province, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

The first explosion occurred at 7.10am at the Panjiawan bus stop, and the second at 8.05am at a nearby crossroads, the report said.

A destroyed bus was seen in front of the Panjiawan bus stop, Xinhua said, and broken glass was scattered in front. No further information was available.

The explosions come just weeks before the start of the Olympic Games on August 8 in Beijing. The government has boosted security around the country to try to ensure a worry-free games.
