Release of Manson gang murderer opposed

The California parole board was urged today to deny a request by Charles Manson follower Susan Atkins to be released from jail on compassionate grounds.

The board meets tomorrow to consider the application from the terminally-ill Atkins.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley urged the parole board to deny her request.

Atkins was convicted of eight murders in 1969.

Cooley said in a letter to the board chairman that Atkins’ crimes alone warranted denial of the request.

The district attorney noted that Atkins personally stabbed pregnant actress Sharon Tate, tasted her blood and used it to write the word “Pig” on the victim’s door.

The parole board meets tomorrow in Sacramento.
