Hot, dry weather expected to fan US wildfires

Forecasters warned today that the cooler, damper conditions that helped efforts to fight a massive wildfire in Southern California would soon turn hot and dry.

The grim prediction came as some residents whose homes were threatened by the flames were allowed to return home.
