Eight killed as building collapses in China

The Xinhua News Agency said eight people have been killed in the collapse of a four-story building under construction in central China.

Xinhua said 100 rescuers are searching today for missing workers.

It is unclear how many people were on the site when the building collapsed yesterday in a suburb of Wuhan city.

Xinhua said 13 people have been rescued from the rubble and taken to hospitals.

Large equipment is having trouble getting to the site because of narrow alleyways in the neighbourhood.

Authorities said the construction of the residential building is illegal because it has not been approved by the local government.

The cause of the collapse is under investigation.
